A new analytical solution for the resistance of a horizontal slice through a pile to lateral loading is presented. The solution assumes that a pile is surrounded by an infinite elastic medium, but it allows for the tendency of this medium to separate from the back of the pile. The impact of the subgrade reactions on the horizontal resistance characteristics of a pile depends on the deformation mode of the pile. In this study, the relationship between the pile deformation mode and subgrade reaction development behavior was investigated through horizontal loading experiments of the piles.
